I have lived in the depths of the ocean my whole life, never venturing to the surface. Unlike other sirens, I can't sing songs which lure countless people to their deaths. I don't know what makes me different. All I know is that I'm missing something. Something far more important than my voice, but I have no idea what that could be.
It leaves me empty and cold, nothing more than a fragment of what I'm supposed to be. I swim along with the other sirens, but when they leave at night to go to land I swim along the ocean floor, searching. I search for what I am missing, what can make me whole, but I don't have a clue what I'm looking for.
One night as I am searching I catch a glimpse of something familiar, though I know I haven't seen it before. A dagger buried in sand and covered in kelp, only noticeable by a faint gleam of light illuminating it. I pick it up, examining it. It looks really old, but there isn't a bit of rust on it.
I dig up a sheath buried nearby. Its covered in ancient writing that I can't decipher much of. I slide the dagger into the sheath and swim out of the kelp patch only to see a woman of a species I've never seen before, with the tail of a shark.
"Hello Adamaris," she says in an ethereal voice. "I am the sea witch and I'm here to tell you how to find what you're looking for." Something about her seems familiar, like she's given me something before. I nod slightly and she smiles, "Excellent. First, you'll be needing this back." She holds out a bottle with a faint glowing light in it and I'm suddenly struck with the thought that it's mine. "After all, you need a way to speak don't you?"
